Novus are now seeking IT teaching professionals to join our education team at HMP/YOI Low Newton. This is a permanent, part time position for 24 hours per week. Teaching five mornings per week.
In this role, you will work and be supported by our amazing team of dedicated professionals to mentor our learners to develop their IT literacy, which will in turn help them to secure employment opportunities post-release. We offer the Essential Digital Skills Qualification which is delivered through the awarding body NCFE. All the classroom facilities are equipped to the highest standards to ensure the best learning experience with the latest software to enhance learning.
Here at Low Newton, you will be welcomed and supported by an amazing team, not only dedicated to the learners but to their colleagues. We have been rated as a 3-star site 2 years running, which has been recognised as being one of the best places to work in a recent survey.
You will need patience, passion and understanding in your approach to our learners who have hit a bump in the road but want to learn and improve.
Working in a prison is different to a mainstream education facility. We operate with security at the forefront of what we do, so our class sizes are small to maximise supportive delivery.
Classrooms are risk assessed for 8 learners and 1 peer mentor. Alongside this, you will be supported by our Learning Support Practitioner (Regional SENCO, who will support with LDD advice and guidance for learners when required).
Low Newton is part of the Women’s Estate North Region and holds just over 300 prisoners. The sentence length and age range of the learners varies. Sentence lengths differ and learners can be remand (not sentenced) short term, to long term and life sentences. Ages range between Young Offenders (18-21) to retirement and elderly.
Within the education department, we offer a variety of courses that allow the learners to gain knowledge, develop skills to enable them to progress and provide every opportunity to gain employment on release.
Prison patrol officers are on hand to ensure the lessons run smoothly and a calm learning environment is maintained. These officers are situated within the education department and are available at all times.
We always try to cater to a learner's individual needs and ensure we create a positive learning experience.
Time will be given before and after the session to plan lessons; mark learners’ work and complete required administration tasks. The Local Education Manager and Hub Managers are always on hand to provide support, as and when needed.
